Mothers’ Union in Barbados

In October 2017 I visited my family in Barbados and was able to join the Mothers’ Union for a meeting.

The Mothers’ Union branch was the Holy Trinity, St Philips, Barbados. They meet on the second Saturday in the month, in the afternoon. They start with worship, using the MU blue and red prayer books along with readings from the Bible. Afterwards a short committee meeting took place, which involved all branch members. They too had projects and also dealt with individuals. While the quiz Q and A from the Bible was in progress, the preparation for the birthday party was taking place.

I was asked to give an overview of my branch meetings and I left details of the Cross in Pocket, which is our latest project. I was given an open invitation to their meetings whenever I am on the island again. We ended with prayers and grace.

Frances Lunch Club

During the October half term the children (and their families) who attended the Frances Lunch Club had great fun doing Autumn craft activities. They also ate well of course.

The photographs show some of the results and the lovely happy faces. The time together was enjoyed by all.

Pauline Jacobs and Hazel Goodman, friends of Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust met up at the Study Day on 12th August in Guilsbrough Church, where they spent a time of fellowship beside the MU Banner. Both Pauline and Hazel are MU Unit Committee members. They spent the rest of the day with other friends of NHCT exploring and finding out about Churches around Northamptonshire. The day was led by Mr Bruce Bailey and was very enjoyable.

Walking for Mothers’ Union

On Saturday 14th October some of us ‘walked for Mothers’ Union’. For the most agile it was 5 km for the less agile i.e. me, it was 2.5 km.

During the walks we attracted attention from the other members of the public who went about their business. Questions were asked and answers given. It is always good to raise Mothers’ Union profile in a fun way.

The first photo shows Raymond, Pam, Penny and Doreen as they are about to set off around Wicksteed park. Good to see one of our male members taking part.

I would like to thank everybody who walked on that day. Thank goodness the sun shone.

Greater Northampton Deanery Annual Deanery Fair

Greater Northampton Deanery held their Annual Deanery Fair on Saturday 14th October which was opened by Hazel our Vice President. We managed to raise £535 which will be donated to the London Diocese Grenfell Tower A F I A appeal and The South Sudan Appeal.

Mothers’ Union Celebrations at Abington Church

Abington Church Mothers’ Union were delighted that Barbara Haynes, Diocesan President, accepted their invitation for her to present two long service awards on Sunday 8th October. Pamela Cummings and Margaret Kirby have each been an MU member for 60 years and so it was a very special occasion celebrating this achievement during the 10 am Eucharist service, surrounded by other MU members, family and friends. Barbara spoke of her pleasure at meeting members and the importance of acknowledging the many years of service and commitment given to MU by Pamela and Margaret. Both ladies were presented with a certificate and small rose plant. She also welcomed our Associate Priest Revd. Chrys Tremththanmor as a member to the branch. Chrys had previously been enrolled in to Mothers’ Union in Bridgend, Wales, so it was a fitting occasion for her to have her membership transferred. After the service the branch members had a celebratory photograph together.

Diocesan A.G.M.

At the diocesan A.G.M. Bishop John was our speaker. He told us about his visits to Sudan where one of our prayer links, Rumbek, is. It was really good to get to know about the people there and to realise about the problems that they have to overcome and also their enthusiasm for Mothers’ Union. In the picture Jill Goodman, our worldwide coordinator, is giving the vote of thanks.

Centenary Service for St. Matthews’ Mothers’ Union, Eye

This was a very happy, celebratory evening at Eye. As we waited for the service to start we listened to the music group playing and watched a Powerpoint of pictures about the history of the branch. The service was very well attended by members of the branch, the deanery and the diocese who really enjoyed it. The theme for the evening was Faith in Action, a true sense of what the branch had achieved in the last 100 years.

After the service we all met together for fellowship and refreshments (as always they were delicious) and of course no celebration is complete without a cake.

President’s Visit to Werrington Branch

The little shoes were made by MU members and friends to give to the children after the Celebrating Baptism service as a reminder of their journey with Jesus.
